Mumbai: The Maharashtra Police Saturday rescued a 50-year-old woman who was found tied to a tree in the thick forest at Sonurli in the Sindhudurg district.

The woman had a photocopy of an American passport on her as well as an Aadhaar card. She was rushed to a local hospital for treatment and was then moved to Goa Medical College.

“She was severely dehydrated when we found her. By the looks of it, she was probably trapped there for at least 48 hours. She couldn’t talk, but was responsive,” said Amol Chavan, inspector at the Sawantwadi Police station, who was part of the team that found her.

The police also found a bag and a laptop in her possession, he told ThePrint, adding that a shepherd heard her cries and alerted the cops.

Chavan said the woman’s legs were tied to the tree with a chain, which had a lock, forcing the police to first cut the tree and then break the lock.

The Banda police station in Sindhudurg has taken over the case for further investigation.

An officer at the police station said, “Her Aadhaar card had a Tamil Nadu address. There was also a note in which she referred to her ‘former husband’, who is suspected to be in Tamil Nadu. We haven’t been able to record the woman’s statement yet, as she is still very weak.”
