New Delhi: Several states across the country, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness heavy rainfall for the next four days, the India Meteorological Department has predicted. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in northwest, central and east India during the next three to four days. It has also said that rainfall will continue in along west coast during the next five days.

The weather office has sounded red alert, predicting extremely heavy rainfall, in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat till August 3. Heavy rainfall is also likely to lash several other states including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan for the next few days, with IMD issuing an orange alert for them. An orange alert has been sounded for Karnataka for August 1 and 2.

According to IMD, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm,
lightning is also likely to continue in northeast India during next five days. The Met Department has predicted heavy rainfall for Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur, Mizoram on August 1.

Heavy rainfall is also predicted for Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Nagaland and Tripura till August 2 and for , Arunachal Pradesh till August 4.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour lashed Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening, leading to waterlogging and disrupting vehicular traffic in several areas. The incessant rain brought the national capital to its knees inundating large parts of the city while key stretches were choked with unending traffic and people left stranded as roads resembled rivers.

Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced late night that all schools in the city will remain closed on Thursday. “In light of the very heavy rainfall this evening and the forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools both government and private will remain closed on August 1st,” she posted on ‘X’.
