Watch: Teesta Dam’s power station destroyed after a massive landslide

1

A massive landslide in Sikkim on Tuesday morning destroyed the power station of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s (NHPC Teesta Stage 5 dam). According to reports, the hill adjacent to the 510 MW power station experienced multiple landslides and was declared a threat. On Tuesday morning, the hill slid and came down, turning the power station into debris.

The power station was evacuated a few days ago because of the multiple landslides occurring in that area, as reported by NDTV. Therefore, no casualties have been reported after the incident. This incident took place in Balutar, near Dipu Drak, East Sikkim.

A video of the landslide recorded by the people went viral over social media. In the video, it can be seen, that a portion of the cliff is shifting, and within a few seconds, a large portion of the hill fell on the power station, reducing it to pieces.

The Stage 5 dam has not been operational since October 2023 after the Lhonak glacial lake burst in the state. As per the reports, the cloudburst triggered a major flood, which partially destroyed the biggest hydropower project in Sikkim, the Teesta Dam at Chungthang. Following the flood, the alternative road connecting Singtam town with the Mangan district was also disrupted. The road served as the highway for the army movement around the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Tuesday, that light to moderate rainfall can happen in the parts of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Assam during the week.

Sikkim is on the warning of experiencing heavy rainfall between 20 August- 23 August.
