Former MP and BJP leader Kirit Somaiya on Tuesday celebrated Krishna Janmashtami by breaking the dahi handi in Mumbai’s Bhandup.

The 70-year-old MP can be seen climbing the human pyramid to break the earthen pot filled with curd and later dancing on the song being played there.

This is not the first time that the BJP leader was seen celebrating the Krishna Janmashtami with such fervour. In 2022, Somaiya shakily climbed a three-tier pyramid to celebrate dahi handi in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar.

Notably, devotees of Lord Krishna enthusiastically participate in the dahi handi ritual, with great joy and excitement. This year, Dahi Handi falls on August 27, a day after Krishna Janmashtami.

The Dahi Handi ritual consists of an earthen pot (handi) hung at a height, filled with ghee, sweets, dahi (curd) and butter, which a bunch of individuals try to reach and break. The breaking of the Handi symbolises the playful and mischievous nature of Lord Krishna.

At least 41 ‘Govindas’, youngsters involved in the formation of multi-storeyed human pyramids as part of the ‘Dahi Handi’ celebrations, were injured in Mumbai on Tuesday, officials said.

These injured Govindas were admitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run and private hospitals in the city for treatment, a civic official said.

The Dahi Handi, part of the Janmashtami festival that marks the birth of Lord Krishna, is seeing enthusiastic participation by the revellers. The festival is being celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety in Mumbai and other parts of the state.

As part of the celebrations, Govindas or Dahi Handi participants form multi-tiered human pyramids to break ‘Dahi Handis’ (claypots filled with curd) suspended in mid-air.

Several all-women Govinda groups are also seen trying to break the Dahi Handi by forming human pyramids.

The festival also led to traffic snarls in many areas in the city as Dahi Handis were hung at key intersections and junctions. The haphazardly parked two-wheelers and other vehicles belonging to Govinda groups added to the woes.
