Violence has erupted once again after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh rejected the demand for a separate administration for the Kuki-Jo community. The latest case is from Imphal West district, where two people, including a woman, were killed and 9 others were injured in an attack by suspected militants on Sunday. After this attack, the security forces are on alert mode.
According to police, the militants carried out bomb attacks along with indiscriminate firing from the hill top towards Kotruk and the valley bottom areas of neighbouring Kadangband. People in Kadangband area claim that a drone dropped a bomb on a house. Police said two people were killed in the attack while nine others were injured. They said several houses were also damaged in the militant shelling. Hospital officials said five of the nine injured had bullet injuries while others had shrapnel injuries.
The attack spread panic among the people
The sudden attack on the village created panic among the people, forcing many people, including women, children and the elderly, to flee to safer places, police said. The deceased woman was identified as 31-year-old Nangbam Surabala Devi. The body was taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for postmortem. The other deceased is yet to be identified, police said. Security forces, including state and central units, have been deployed in the area to stabilize the situation.
Two people including a woman were killed
The state government has strongly condemned the attack on unarmed villagers of Kotruk. Manipur Home Department in a statement said, “The State Government has received information about the unfortunate incident of attack on unarmed Kotruk villagers with drones, bombs and sophisticated weapons allegedly by Kuki militants in which two persons including a woman were killed. Such act of terrorising unarmed villagers has been taken very seriously by the State Government while it is making all possible efforts to bring normalcy and peace in the State.”
It said that such act of creating mayhem among unarmed villagers is being seen as an attempt by the state government to derail the efforts of establishing peace in the state. The Home Department said, “The state government has initiated immediate action to control the situation and punish those involved in the attack on Koutruk village of Imphal West.” Meanwhile, the state’s Director General of Police has directed all Superintendents of Police to remain on maximum alert in all border areas.
