Kolkata airport operates despite heavy flooding
What’s the story
Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging on the runway at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, West Bengal, after an intense deluge pounded the city and surrounding regions on Saturday.
Planes were observed parked on waterlogged taxiways. The airport, however, is functioning smoothly without disruption.
The city of Kolkata and its surrounding areas are experiencing continuous rain due to a deep depression caused by a low-pressure area.

Kolkata experiences widespread waterlogging, rainfall continues
Southern districts, including Howrah, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, Nadia, and the North and South 24 Parganas are expected to continue experiencing showers over the next 12 hours.
Since Friday afternoon, some areas of the city have received up to 7cm of rainfall.
Weather officials said the low-pressure area causing the rainfall is shifting toward Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, carrying an active monsoon trough over the southern districts of West Bengal.
IMD issues alerts amidst continuing rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “yellow” alert for heavy rain up to 11cm for Gangetic West Bengal districts, including Kolkata.
An “orange” alert indicating heavy to very heavy rains is in effect for districts such as Purulia, Murshidabad, Malda, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong.
The Alipurduar district has been issued a “red” alert with rainfall predictions of up to 20cm.
