Heavy rainfall leaves Kolkata airport waterlogged

Kolkata: Heavy rainfall in West Bengal left the Kolkata airport waterlogged on Saturday. A few parking stands and runway are affected by severe waterlogging for which additional pumps have been deployed. However, flight operations at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata are proceeding normally despite incessant downpour. According to airport authority sources, all flights are scheduled on time.

Continuous rainfall throughout the night and early morning caused flooding at the airport on Saturday, said officials. Several videos have surfaced on social media showing parked Air India and IndiGo planes inundated in rainwater at the airport. Water gushed into the airport premises and caused water logging in the operational area, according to officials.

“The flight operations at NSCBI Airport, Kolkata are proceeding normally despite heavy rainfall. Both runway and all taxiways are fully operational. However, a few parking stands are affected by waterlogging for which additional pumps have been deployed. Additional pumps have been deployed to drain the water from operational area. Everything under control,” the Kolkata airport said in a post on X.

On Friday, the Kazi Nazrul Islam (KNI) airport at Andal in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district was flooded due to heavy rain, leading to suspension of flight operations to and from the airport. Around three flights, including one from New Delhi and another from Bengaluru, had to be cancelled on Friday.

In a statement issued later, Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL), the developer of the airport, said due to unprecedented rainfall recorded in and around the Durgapur-Asansol area since Thursday, both KNI airport and the surrounding areas have experienced significant water logging.

“The situation has been further aggravated owing to a breach of a water reservoir upstream. Due to the flooding at the airport, on account of inclement weather conditions, operations have been temporarily suspended and appropriate authorities informed,” it said.
