Chennai: The trial run of the country’s first metro version of Vande Bharat will be conducted between Chennai Beach – Katpadi tomorrow, Saturday, August 3 with the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety on board. The fully air-conditioned train that will eventually replace MEMU will have similar facilities to Vande Bharat Express except for the pantry car.

The train designed for short-distance journeys can run up to a speed of 130 kmph. Her’s the video of India’s first Vande Metro being rolled out of ICF-Chennai recently.

Metro transformation

Vande metro is a short-distance moderate to semi-high-speed train. The metro train will be completely air-conditioned with Bio toilet and much better-enhanced facilities. Like the Vande Bharat trains, the railway administration is also planning to introduce Vande Metro trains to connect the two cities over short distances. This Vande Metro train is planned to run between two major cities which are adjacent to each other. Vande Metro Rail will operate only within a maximum distance of 250 km, according to officials.

Vande Metro trains can travel at a speed of up to 100 kmph. It is said by the authorities that these coaches have been prepared with hi-tech facilities like the Vande Bharat train and CCTV surveillance cameras throughout.
Each coach of this train is designed to accommodate 100 people sitting and 200 people standing.

Around 1 crore people travelled on the Chennai Metro in July alone

Meanwhile, the Chennai Metro has become a major hit among city commuters as it registers a steady uptick in ridership every month. According to CMRL a total of 95,35,019 persons travelled in Metro from 01.07.2024 to 31.07.2024. Chennai Metro has registered an average daily ridership of 3,50,545 in July 2024. This is 11,01,182 more than the numbers in June 2024.
