Utahns Stuck In Cars: How to Prepare For This Nightmare
Trip Should Have Taken 4 Hours Turned Into 24 Hours
Recently a truck carrying batteries overturned and caught fire on I-15 between Las Vegas and California and closed the freeway for 44 hours. Some people were stranded for two days. What should have been a short trip turned into a nightmare.
I talked with Gary Sorensen from St. George who was stuck in this mess. “There were people running out of gas,” said Sorensen. “People without food. People didn’t have their medications, having a rough time with heat stroke. It was a very dangerous situation.”
He said there were ambulances that would arrive to take people having emergencies away. He was finally able to get off the freeway and it took nearly an entire day to finally get home.
How Can You Prepare for Something Like This?
Ready.gov has a list of items to keep in your car in case of a disaster. These include jumper cables, flares, a cell phone charger and a blanket. An ice scraper and small shovel could be helpful depending on where you are traveling.
Preparing your vehicle for a trip is important as well. Check all the fluids beforehand and leave with a full tank of gas. As you drive, refill the tank when it hits halfway. Drivers who were running out of gas on I-15 and were able to get to a station found it was out of gas from the demand.

Make sure you have any medications you need on hand in an emergency. A seventy-two-hour kit would be good to have in the trunk with the basics available. Costco has these they are selling that come in a bucket.
I don’t know that you can plan for every contingency, but I have started thinking about ways I could be more prepared should I find myself in something like what happened in Nevada.
