Union Cabinet clears 3 new metro rail projects, 2 airport facilities

The Thane Integral Ring Metro will be built at cost of Rs 12,200 crore. The project will provide connectivity to several areas of the city with interchanges. Apart from Pune and Thane, the cabinet also approved airport projects at Bagdogra in West Bengal and Bihta in Bihar at an approximate cost of Rs 2,962 crore.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved three new metro rail projects and two new airports in the country on Friday. It has approved metro rail projects in Maharashtra’s Pune and Thane ahead of Assembly elections in the state.

As per Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the cabinet also approved two corridors of the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase-3. Releasing a statement, the cabinet said it approved the Swargate-to-Katraj Underground Line Extension of the existing PCMC-Swargate Metro Line of the Pune Metro Phase-I project.

Pune Metro Expansion

The statement said that the new extension is known as the Line-1 B extension. While the extension will span 5.46 km, it will have also three underground stations. The line will connect crucial areas including Bibwewadi, Market Yard, Balaji Nagar, and the Katraj suburbs of Pune. “The project, aimed at providing seamless connectivity in Pune, is set to be completed by February 2029. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,954.53 crore, with funding to be equally shared by the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, along with contributions from bilateral agencies, etc,” it said.

Further pointing out that the extension will integrate with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, the statement further said that the project would provide “seamless connectivity for commuters within and outside Pune City. This extension will enhance connectivity between the southernmost part of Pune, the northern parts of Pune and the eastern and western regions via the District Court interchange station, providing seamless connectivity for commuting within and outside Pune City.”

Cost of Bengaluru project

Sharing further details, the statement added that the Phase-3 of the Bangalore Metro, consisting of corridors , Hoshahalli to Kadabagere and JP Nagar to Kempapura – will be completed at the cost of Rs 15,611 crore. The Thane Integral Ring Metro, on the other hand, will be built at cost of Rs 12,200 crore. The project will provide connectivity to several areas of the city with interchanges.

Apart from Pune and Thane, the cabinet also approved airport projects at Bagdogra in West Bengal and Bihta in Bihar at an approximate cost of Rs 2,962 crore.According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the government cleared infrastructure projects worth close Rs 2 lakh crore since returning to power for the third successive term in June.
