Tourism Minister Announces Positive Relations and Ambitious Plans for Indian Tourist Market

Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal has announced an optimistic outlook for the relationship between India and the Maldives, noting significant improvements since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu attended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. In an interview with PSM from New Delhi, Faisal expressed confidence that India would emerge as one of the top three source markets for tourist arrivals in the Maldives by the end of the year.

Earlier this year, tensions between the Maldives and India led to a substantial backlash, including calls for a boycott of the Maldives. This campaign involved notable Bollywood stars, influential politicians, and key figures in the tourism industry. In response, the Maldivian Tourism Ministry, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), National Hotels and Guesthouses Association of Maldives (NHGAM), and Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) have joined forces to organize a roadshow promoting Maldivian tourism in India.

“This initiative will significantly boost tourism,” Faisal stated. “During my visit, I will meet with various Indian dignitaries, including ministers, film stars, and businessmen. The relationship between India and the Maldives is looking very positive, especially following President Dr. Muizzu’s recent official visit to India.”

The roadshows are scheduled to take place in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The first event kicked off in New Delhi on Tuesday, with over 150 Indian tourism industry players expected to participate.

“Last year, India was our number one market with over 200,000 arrivals. This year, we have already recorded 71,000 arrivals from India. Our goal is to have India among the top three source markets by the end of the year,” Faisal added.

These roadshows aim to restore and enhance the relationship between the two countries, ensuring that tourism remains a robust economic driver for the Maldives. The collaborative effort between the Maldivian tourism authorities and industry stakeholders is designed to create a compelling narrative for Indian tourists, highlighting the Maldives as a premier travel destination.

By engaging directly with Indian dignitaries and influencers, the Maldivian Tourism Ministry hopes to overcome past tensions and build a stronger, more positive image. The focus on New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore reflects the strategic importance of these major cities in attracting a high volume of tourists.

The roadshows represent a concerted effort to turn the tide in favor of Maldivian tourism, aiming to secure India’s position as a leading source market. With enhanced promotional activities and strengthened diplomatic ties, the Maldives is poised to welcome a growing number of Indian tourists, contributing to the nation’s tourism growth and economic prosperity.
