Thief Delays Robbery to read Book

In an unusual turn of events, a thief in Rome put his robbery on hold to read a book. The 38-year-old suspect reportedly broke into an apartment in the Prati district by entering through a balcony. However, his attention was quickly diverted when he noticed a book about Homer’s Iliad on the bedside table. Despite the 71-year-old homeowner confronting him, the thief remained engrossed in reading the book, seemingly oblivious to the ongoing situation. According to NBC15, the thief was apprehended shortly after attempting to escape through the same balcony he had used to enter.

The book that captured the thief’s interest was Giovanni Nucci’s The Gods at Six O’Clock. Nucci expressed his delight upon learning that his book had so captivated the thief. “It’s fantastic. I’d love to meet the person caught red-handed and give him a copy of the book so he can finish reading it,” Nucci told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.

The thief allegedly told police that he had climbed up the balcony to visit a friend in the same building and mistakenly believed he had ended up in a B&B. “I saw the book and started reading it,” he said, as reported by BBC. The thief was also found in possession of a bag containing expensive clothing stolen from another property earlier that evening.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar case in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where a thief fell asleep while attempting to rob a house in June. The robber, who was heavily intoxicated, had completed his burglary and turned on the air conditioner to rest, only to be discovered by police the following morning. The residence belonged to Dr. sunil Pandey, who was away in varanasi at the time.
