Guwahati: The Bhumi pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) for Tata Electronics’ ₹27,000-crore semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district of Assam took place on Saturday. The facility is expected to be operational next year.
“At its capacity it will employ 27,000 people – 15,000 direct jobs and additional 12,000 indirect jobs,” Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran said at the event attended by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as well.
“We want to move fast. We are trying to accelerate the building of this factory. We hope sometime in 2025 we will be able to complete this facility and quickly start operations,” Chandrasekaran said.
The company has already employed 1,000 people from Assam and as the facility expands it will bring entire semiconductor ecosystem companies – which will start as suppliers – to the country, he said.
The chief minister promised that the company will face no difficulty in setting up this facility. “The Tatas could have set up this industry in any state of the country but they chose Assam and we are grateful for that”, he said. “The Tatas had given the assurance that local youth will be appointed and already 1,000 girls have been recruited and they are being trained in Hosur,” he added.
The state also signed an MoU with Tata Group firms Amalgamated Plantations and Indian Hotels Company to build hotel and hospitality infrastructure in Kaziranga. As a part of the MoU, a Taj Resort and Spa will be opened with an investment of ₹120 crore.
