Chennai’s Second airport gets site clearance for Parandur, Construction to begin in 2026.

Chennai: Following site clearance, the Tamil Nadu government will soon apply for in-principle approval for the Parandur airport, the proposed second airport for Chennai. Soon after approval Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO) will sign MoU with Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and get aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. TIDCO is planning to start the construction in 2026 with a completion target of 2029.

Govt to acquire 3,774 acres in Parandur

Meanwhile, Louis Berger, the consultant appointed by TIDCO has begun the work to carry out the techno economic report for the second airport proposed at Parandur.

Tamil Nadu government has earlier issued orders to acquire 3,774 acres in Parandur for setting up a greenfield airport for Chennai. The greenfield airport will be constructed in four phases and accommodate 100 million passengers annually.

The state government has granted administrative approval for a new greenfield airport in Parandur, Chennai. The approval includes acquiring 1500 hectares of patta land under the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Lands for Industrial Purposes Act and alienating approx 800 hectares of govt land in Parandur and 19 other villages.

Chennai’s fourth railway terminal to be shifted to Perambur 

In a parallel development, it is not Villivakkam but Perambur that will get Chennai’s fourth railway terminal. Southern Railways General Manager has informed that a master plan is now being prepared to develop the fourth terminal at Perambur instead of Villvakkam. He also informed that they will be developing two additional lines between Perambur and Ambattur to house the terminal.
