Tamil Nadu weather alert: Interior Tamil Nadu witnessed thunderstorms in many places including parts of Madurai, Karur, Trichy and eastern parts of Namakkal district received moderate to heavy rains while isolated rains reported in Delta districts as well.

IMD forecasts moderate to heavy rains in parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai for the next 24 hours.

Chennai: The Regional Metrological Centre (RMC), Chennai has predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning at several places in Tamil Nadu for the next few days. Especially, heavy rain is likely in one or two places in the hilly areas. Light to moderate rain with thundershowers may occur over Chennai and suburbs.

“Due to an atmospheric downward circulation prevailing over parts of Tamil Nadu and a zonal upper circulation prevails over the Kerala coast, Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning may occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal today. Kanyakumari, Thenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Tirupur, Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Karur, Trichy, Salem, Namakkal, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli districts are likely to receive heavy rain at one or two places,” the weather agency said.

Heavy rains to continue in Tamil Nadu

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on August 16, Friday.  Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Tirupur, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kanchipuram districts and hilly areas of Coimbatore are likely to receive heavy rain.

Similarly, Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai Districts, Coimbatore Hill Districts, Puducherry And heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Karaikal on August 17.

On the next day, Kanyakumari, Nellai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Thenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Tirupur, Nilgiris, Madurai, Virudhunagar districts and hilly areas of Coimbatore are likely to receive heavy rain on 18th August, Saturday. Heavy rain is likely over hilly areas of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Thenkasi, Nellai, Kanyakumari districts, and a few places in Nilgiri district.

Weather Forecast for Chennai and Suburbs

The sky will remain partly cloudy for the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rain with thundershower is likely over a few parts of the city. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 35° Celsius and the minimum temperature is likely to be around 27-28° Celsius.

In the last 24 hours, interior Tamil Nadu witnessed thunderstorms in many places including parts of Madurai, Karur, Trichy and eastern parts of Namakkal district received moderate to heavy rains while isolated rains reported in Delta districts as well.
