State level seminar on sustainable rural development in Nagaland held

Kohima, August 3 (MExN): A one-day state level seminar on “Achieving Sustainable Rural Development in Nagaland: Challenges, Interventions and Way Forward” was conducted today by Modern College, Piphema with the support of NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) at the College Indoor Stadium.

Delivering keynote address, Ong Pulam Mounglang, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, appreciated Modern College for initiating the seminar. Through NABARD intervention, Nagaland has 13 FPOs and 21 springsheds projects through the Tribal Development Fund apart from several other works, he said.

Nezelu Nyekha, Executive Director, Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS) talked on the topic ‘Visiting the role of agriculture, Off & Non Farm and Rural Institution.’ She highlighted the activities of the CWWS in integrated farming and GI of Chakhesang shawls.

Sentimongla Kechuchar, Executive Director, Northeast Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) spoke on the topic “Community Development Initiatives: Implementation Challenges and Successful Interventions.” She challenged the students to change their attitude and move from dependency to self-reliance. She also stressed on the need to give special attention towards farm sector.

Paul Lokho, Director, Pro Rural talked on the topic “The Way Forward for Sustainable Rural Development in Nagaland.” He highlighted the role of Pro Rural and its association with rural communities in Jhum cultivation. He stressed on the need to have a strong policy to take agriculture scope forward. Sustainability in Nagaland will come with sustainable agriculture, he maintained.

The seminar was coordinated by the departments of Economics and Vocation and attended by 230 members including teaching faculty and students of Baptist College and NEISSR, Dimapur.

The programme was chaired by Mhabeni Tsopoe, 5th semester, Department of Economics. Dr Vitsou Yano, Principal, Modern College delivered welcome address while vote of thanks was proposed by L Athikho, HoD, Department of Economics.
