Srinagar Records 35.3°C Amid Severe Heat Wave in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A severe heat wave tightened its grip on the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday, with the local meteorological department predicting a five-day wet spell starting from August 15 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Srinagar, recorded a temperature 5.9 degrees above normal, with the mercury settling at 35.3 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar, like some other parts of Kashmir, was hotter than the Jammu division today.

Kupwara was the hottest in all of JK at 35.9 degrees Celsius, which was also 5.9 degrees above normal.

Qazigund and Kokernag in South Kashmir also experienced the heat wave, with temperatures settling at 34.2 degrees Celsius and 32.7 degrees Celsius, respectively, the data reveals.

Jammu, however, was slightly cooler than Kashmir today. According to the details, Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius, while in Katra, the mercury settled at 31.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the weatherman has predicted a five-day wet spell starting tomorrow.

“A spell of light to moderate rain and thundershowers is expected in many places across Kashmir and the Jammu division early in the morning, with brief showers at a few places in the late afternoon,” said Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad.

He further added that from August 16 to 20, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in many places across JK.

Moreover, the MeT has forecasted the possibility of intense showers for a brief period and heavy rainfall in the Jammu division, which may lead to flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas of JK during the next five days.

It added that waterlogging in low-lying areas and an increase in water levels in the Tawi and other flood channels of the Jammu division are expected during the next five days. —(KNO)
