Chennai: The Chennai police have arrested six people and detained two others in connection with forcing a 14-year-old girl into prostitution. Among those arrested is the girl’s sister. The victim, who originally lived in Chemmencheri, had moved to Paduvanchery to stay with her sister. According to police reports, the sister and her mother-in-law forced the girl into prostitutio and tooko her to various locations, including KK Nagar and Chengalpattu.
The police were alerted by a child welfare committee in Chengalpattu, which prompted the formation of a special team by the Selaiyur All Women Police. The team successfully rescued the girl. After an investigation and analysis of call records, the police arrested six people: Lakshmi, Prakash, Damodharan, Kavita, Karpagam and Srinivasan. They have been charged under relevant provisions of the law. That apart, two more suspects have been detained and are currently being questioned in relation to the case. Further investigation is ongoing.

In a similar incident, seven people were arrested in Chennai for coercing schoolgirls into prostitution in May. Sources report that the main accused, K. Nadhiya, befriended her daughter’s classmates under the guise of teaching them beautician courses. She allegedly exploited the children’s economic vulnerabilities, offering them between Rs 25,000 and Rs 35,000 to engage in prostitution, primarily with elderly men from Hyderabad and Coimbatore.
In another incident from Delhi, the city police rescued a 14-year-old orphan girl from prostitution on July 12. The girl, who came to Delh from UP seeking a job, was forced into sex work by Anjali alias Meena, 42, near Ajmeri Gate. A police team, led by SHO C L Meena and an NGO, found the girl and took her to a shelter. She was counselled and revealed that she met a man in Zakir Nagar who handed her over to Anjali, who exploited homeless teenagers. The girl was rescued and is receiving support. Anjali was arrested and an investigation is ongoing.
