The State Bank of India (SBI) added a new branch to its banking network in Nagaland, opening the 7th Mile branch in Chümoukedima on August 26. The new branch was inaugurated by the Chairperson of the Chümoukedima Town Council, Lhousito Khro.

The 7th Mile Branch is the 38th branch of the SBI’s Dimapur region and the 73rd SBI branch in Nagaland.

Khro regarded the opening of the new branch as bringing banking to the doorstep of the people of Chümoukedima. According to him, the idea of banking in the past did not go beyond deposit and withdrawing and that most people assumed it was for the rich and salaried persons. In the present-day context, however, he said that it extends way beyond, while citing the relationship between business, or starting a business, and availing banking facilities.

Given the nature of the job, he said that bank employees are held in high regard and a job in the banking sector highly sought after. While it is a demanding job, he said that the employees should take the extra step to serve the people with a “smiling quality.”

Chief General Manager, Guwahati Circle, SBI, Sahadevan Radhakrishnan, said that it is the responsibility of the banking staff to provide service with a smile. “The customers pay for our salaries. It is our responsibility to support them, every customer must go back content and smiling,” he said.
