Margao: Ahead of the exposition of sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier, the Sao Jose de Area gram sabha on Sunday unanimously passed a resolution demanding a master plan to protect and preserve the heritage of Old Goa. The gram sabha also unanimously passed resolutions opposing the Sunburn event as well as demanding equal status to Romi script of Konkani.

The gram sabha members said that an Old Goa heritage master plan is required as rampant constructions are being carried out within the limits of the world heritage site.

First an illegal bungalow, then a resort, and a helipad—there is a systematic attempt to destroy Old Goa, said the villagers.

They said that now four farmhouses have been granted permission within the heritage buffer zone and urged other panchayats to also pass such resolutions before the decennial exposition. They urged that the resolution be forwarded to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane so that the Old Goa heritage site is protected and preserved.

Earlier, the issue of alleged illegal sale of plots rocked the meeting with the villagers demanding action. Villagers said that illegal plots are being developed in no-development zone under the guise of putting up a statue of Shivaji Maharaj.

The marathon gram sabha, which saw discussions on other issues pertaining to the village, finally concluded at 2.30 pm. Later speaking to reporters, the sarpanch, Carmina Fernandes, said a lot of productive discussion was carried out.
