The Chandigarh Police on Friday took custody of Deepak Ranga — the main accused in the RPG attack case on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters building in Mohali —to interrogate him in the 2019 murder case of Rajveer alias Sonu Shah in Burail village, Sector 45.
On Friday, a Crime Branch team of Chandigarh Police, led by Inspector Rajiv Kumar, brought Ranga on a prouction warrant from a Punjab jail. Ranga, 23, a resident of Surakhpur village in Haryana’s Jhajjar, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from UP’s Gorakhpur on January 26 this year.
A source in Chandigarh Police said, “Deepak Ranga is suspected to be involved in the killing of three people in 2019 in Chandigarh. One of the victims killed by him was Sonu Shah. Deepak Ranga was also involved in the killing two students, who were shot dead at a rented accommodation in Sector 15. Ranga was declared a Proclaimed Offender (PO) in the above cases. When the killings took place, Ranga was a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi and Raju Basodi gang. Later, he shifted his loyalty to thegang of Pakistan-based terrorist, Harvinder Singh Rinda, and Canada-based gangster-turned-terrorist Lakhbir Singh Sandhu aka Landa.”
The killings of a muscleman-turned-property dealer, Rajveer alias Sonu Shah, and two B.Sc students — Vineet Kumar, Ajay Sharma — took place in September and December 2019 respectively. Interestingly, four suspects — identified as Ankit Narwal, Sunil, alias Sillu Nandal, Vicky, alias Kalia and Amit — who were arrested for the murders of B.Sc students, were acquitted on February 14 this year bya UT court.
Sources in the crime branch said, “So far, we learnt that Ranga was present with the assailants when bullets were pumped into Sonu Shah. He was also involved in the double murder of B.Sc students.” The crime branch had arrested at least six accused, including Lawrence Bishnoi, and Raju Basodi, in connection with Sonu Shah’s murder in 2021.
