Meerut: Amid reports of violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh, several right wing outfits and workers staged a protest in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, 08 August 2024.

Indian Citizenship For Bangladesh Hindus

They are demanding that the Hindus in Bangladesh who are being allegedly persecuted in the crisis-hit nation should be immediately given Indian citizenship.

The protestors, scores of whom gathered under the Kankarkheda bypass flyover here, also burnt an effigy of “fundamentalists in Bangladesh”.

“We demand from the prime minister that all the Sanatani Hindus living in Bangladesh should be given Indian citizenship with immediate effect. The Sanatani Hindus living in Bangladesh those who want to live in India should be brought here otherwise their safety should be ensured there itself,” said Sachin Sirohi, a protestor.

Meanwhile, Hindu Mahasabha office-bearers in Meerut handed over a memorandum to the district administration which addressed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, appealing for the government’s intervention in stopping the crisis in Bangladesh and for security of Hindus there.

Mobs On Rampage In Dhaka, Other Cities

Bangladesh has been affected by country wide protests that erupted over the reservation issue and snowballed into a violent campaign against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina due to which she resigned and fled the country in a military aircraft on August 5 while the army stepped in to fill the power vacuum by announcing an interim government.

After Hasina’s departure, hundreds broke into her residence, vandalising and looting the interiors, providing dramatic expression to the anti-government protests that have killed more than 400 people.

Sheikh Hasina’s Party Awami League’s Leaders, Workers Also Targeted

According to news reports, Hindus, their establishments and temples have also been at the receiving end of the violence and vandalism in restive Bangladesh as attacks on minority groups, particularly Hindus escalated after Hasina left the country.

There are disturbing reports of violent mobs attacking those involved with Sheikh Hasina’s party Bangladesh Awami League or Awami League along with reports of Hindus and minorities.

Several Hindu Temples, Houses Vandalized

In one alarming incident, the house of Rahul Ananda, a renowned Hindu musician in Dhaka, was attacked by a violent mob. Ananda, his wife, and their kid were able to flee the attack unscathed but the goons looted their house and demolished it.

In another incident, Haradhan Roy Hara, a Hindu councillor was among the 100 people killed in the violent protests across Bangladesh on Sunday, August 4. Homes and temples belonging to Hindus, including ISKCON and Kali temples, were also damaged amid the protests in the country, reports said.

Several Hindu temples were targeted and vandalized across the country including the ISKCON temple in Meherpur, located in the Khulna division which was set on fire by the rioters on August 5 and 6.
