Release Prisoners Held Without Trial, Transfer Undertrials to Kashmir: Ruhullah Writes Amit Shah

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Member of Parliament from Srinagar Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to advocate for the release of hundreds of prisoners from JK who have been held without trials for an extended period of time.

Also, the MP requested the transfer of individuals who are currently under trial and have not yet been convicted to jails within Jammu and Kashmir.

In a letter, Ruhullah further emphasised the urgency of addressing the prolonged detention of these individuals and stressed the importance of upholding their rights to a fair and timely trial.

In a letter to the Home minister, Ruhullah said that several people from JK have been incarcerated from different regions of the valley and many of them are convicted, undertrial or are being held without a trial and are being held in different parts of the country.

“Most of these prisoners held without a trial happen to be young individuals. It is unfair on part of the government to hold these people at an age that is decisive for career and nation building.I believe their release to be imperative, and call upon the government to release the prisoners without a trial at the earliest,” he said.

Calling for a compassionate view for the prisoners serving confinement in different jails across the country, Ruhullah stressed that weather conditions of the Kashmir province of Jammu and Kashmir are different from the rest of the nation and “those prisoners who are convicted or are undertrial should be shifted to the valley on humanitarian aspects. It is also difficult for the relatives of these prisoners to meet them in the different parts of the country both physically and financially.”
