Bhubaneswar: A joint team of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare department on Tuesday raided vegetable vendors at Unit – 1 market in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday to keep the soaring prices of potatoes and onions in check.
According to reports, notices were issued to three vegetable sellers at Unit–1 daily market for failing to maintain records of their potato and onion stocks duly.
Potato and onion were sold at Rs 40 and Rs 50 per kg respectively at various places across Bhubaneswar on Tuesday morning.
Food Supplies officials said that the retail price of potato should be Rs 29 per kg, while onion should be sold at around Rs 50 per kg as the wholesale price of the latter is Rs 42/kg.
Consumers across the state are severely hit due to the alarming prices of vegetables, including potatoes and onions. Though the price of potato dropped from Rs 60 to Rs 40 per kg, onion price has surged from Rs 30 to Rs 50 per kg.
Vegetable traders, on the other hand, said that the onion price rise was mainly due to the shortage of vegetables during monsoon.
