Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Sakthi, V. Somanna, conducted an inspection of the ongoing redevelopment work at the Puducherry railway station. The visit, aimed at reviewing the progress of the redevelopment projects, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing passenger amenities and infrastructural facilities.

Major Investment for Transformation

According to a release from the Tiruchirappalli Division of Southern Railway, the Puducherry railway station is undergoing a significant transformation with an investment of Rs 92 crores. The redevelopment includes the erection of two main buildings equipped with centralized air conditioning, akin to airport standards, and separate drop-off and pick-up bays.

Key features of the project include the renovation and upgradation of existing platforms and platform shelters, the construction of two new Foot Overbridges, a new parcel office, a drivers’ room, an operational building, a sewage treatment plant, and expanded parking areas for four-wheelers, two-wheelers, taxis, and autorickshaws.

During his inspection, Minister Somanna evaluated various aspects of the redevelopment work, focusing on station layout improvements, modernization of facilities, and the implementation of new safety measures. He interacted with key project personnel and field staff to gain insights into the current status of the works and to address any operational challenges.

Additional General Manager of Railways, Kaushal Kishore, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) Amit Kumar Manual, Divisional Railway Manager Tiruchirappalli M.S. Anbalagan, and Chief Engineer (Construction) K. Ravi Kumar briefed the Minister on the various aspects of the project. The officials assured the Minister that efforts are being made to complete the redevelopment within the stipulated timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to passenger services.

Prominent local officials, including Speaker of the Puducherry Assembly R. Selvam, Home Minister of Puducherry A. Namassivayam, and Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Puducherry S. Selvaganapathy, along with other legislators, were present during the inspection.
