Mass Protest in West Bengal Over Kolkata RG Kar Doctor Rape-murder Updates: The midnight protests called by women after the rape and murder of a PG medical student took a violent turn on Thursday midnight. Several police vehicles were damaged after miscreants entered the protests which was described as a protest “For women’s independence on the midnight of independence.”

RG Kar Hospital rape case: Following the huge protests in Kolkata over the rape and murder of the PG Medical student, a political blame game has also started over the matter. The BJP said that the miscreants who created ruckus outside the hospital were ‘TMC goon’. The police meanwhile have appealed to the people to not spread any rumours.

Other political leaders like CPI (M) General Secretary D Raja termed the rape and murder a “heniuos crime”. He said that such a thing should not have happened anywhere in the country. He questioned the status of safety and security of women and children in the country even after 78 years of Independence.

    12-hour strike call to protest vandalisation at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

    Following the vandalisation and attack at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a 12-hour strike has been called. This strike call was given by SUCI(C). This strike begins Friday.

    On Thursday midnight, some goons entered the protests and broke barricades and entered the hospital building forcefully,. They indulged in plunder, first attacking the Emergency building and later trying to move to the place where the medical student was found murdered.  Later several vehicles were damaged and they even tried to burn police vehicles.

    Police cars vanadlaised at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

    The miscreants who had entered the protest soon after it began at midnight, did not just stop at vandalising the hospital building. They also attacked police vehicles and barricades put up at the entrance of the building. Several police cars were damaged and could be seen lying overturned on the roads outside the hospital.

    A riot like situation prevailed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, after some miscreants, disguised as protestors entered the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They broke barricades and vandalised the place. Three floors of the Emergency Building was vandalised by the goons. They also tried to enter the seminar room where the woman was brutalised.

    CPI (M) General Secretary D Raja says, “…What happened in Kolkata was a heinous crime and such crimes should not take place anywhere in the country. We are celebrating 78 years of Independence. What is the meaning of independence if we cannot provide security and protection to our own women and children? If this happens to a lady doctor in a city like Kolkata, think of the condition of our working women in the agricultural field in tribal areas. What is happening? This is a very serious issue.     Kolkata Police Commissioner appeals to people to not spread rumours

    Kolkata Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal says, “Please don’t spread rumours. We are verifying everything… We are constantly interrogating everyone who was there. On the first night, the additional CP was here and he had interrogated everyone personally. Just by rumour-mongering and bringing distrust to the citizens, I think this city is the loser, not Vinnet Goyal… You must ask CBI, the kind of work the officers have done in the span of these four days and the city has given them this, this is demoralising for them.”

    Earlier, a mob enters the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital campus, vandalising the protesting site, vehicles and public property.

    BJP says ‘TMC goons’ behind violence at RG Kar Hospital

    Unidentified miscreants entered the premises of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here shortly after midnight on Thursday and vandalised portions of the medical facility, where the body of a woman doctor was found last week, police said.

    The incident took place amid midnight protests by women against the horrific rape-murder of the doctor at the hospital.

    Violence erupted at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata as an angry mob entered hospital premises and vandalised vehicles. There was a huge crowd outside the hospital protesting and then the barricade was broken and vehicles inside the hospital premises were vandalised.     ‘A new freedom struggle begins tonight,’ Rimjhim wrote

    In her post, Rimjhim asked people to join her near a bus stand in Jadavpur. The call went far and wide — from one location to 300 and from one city to several. It is not only women who participated in the protests, but men too.

    “Tonight is the night of freedom of women of women inside and outside West Bengal. A new freedom struggle begins tonight,” Rimjhim wrote. Earlier, a poster, showing a red hand holding a crescent moon in the background of a night sky, had also gone viral on social media.

    Who gave the call for protests?

    Researcher Rimjhim Sinha made the first call to this campaign. In a Facebook post, she wrote, “I have heard that Principal of RG Kar has said the doctor should not have wandered alone at night. I will be outside at 11.55 pm for my freedom. I will do what I want. I am not ready to listen to ‘night is not safe for women’, ‘the dress is not safe’ and ‘the women does not have a good character’. I will spend the night outdoors.”
