Bhubaneswar: A prisoner undergoing life imprisonment in Choudwar jail died under mysterious circumstances on Monday.
The deceased prisoner has been identified as Mahendra Das, a resident of Bari in Jajpur district.
Notably, Mahendra was arrested in a murder case and was first lodged in Jajpur Jail and later shifted to Choudwar Jail.
Meanwhile, the family of Mahendra, the undertrial prisoner, alleged that he was murdered in Choudwar jail.
According to the family, they received a call from the jail authorities on Monday morning, informing them that Mahendra was seriously ill and had been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. By the time the family reached the hospital, they were told that Mahendra had died.
The family alleged that Mahendra’s body had a large black mark around his neck. The chances of strangulating Mahendra to death cannot be ruled out. They have accused the jail authorities of killing Mahendra and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
