Preparations begin for the election of the new BJP president, the ruling party will add 10 crore members – hindustannewshub.com
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set a target of making at least 10 crore new members under its membership campaign. This campaign is going to start from September 1 in all the states except the election states and union territories. This decision was taken in the meeting of the national and state office bearers of the party on Saturday. Preparations are also being made for the election of the new party chief under the membership campaign.
Party President and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, presidents and office bearers of all states except the election states like Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand and senior party leaders attended the meeting. After the meeting, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that this membership process will be overseen by National General Secretary Vinod Tawde.
MP and party spokesperson Sambit Patra said the membership drive will be conducted in multiple phases from September 1 to November 10 and people will be able to subscribe through missed calls, the party’s website and other digital platforms. The drive will be conducted in poll-bound states and union territories after the elections and the total number is expected to increase further. Patra said around 11 crore people registered as party members in 2014 and around 7 crore people registered in 2019 during the membership drive that was opened for a short period of time.
He said, “Around 18 crore members took membership between 2014 and 2019. The membership drive was to start but due to the pandemic we could not proceed.” The BJP claims to be the largest political entity in the world with 18 crore members. It was founded on April 6, 1980. It is currently in power at the Centre for the third consecutive time with the support of its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies.
“Amit Shah told the gathering that the BJP, unlike other parties, works for the development of the country. He said that since the day it was founded, party workers have not chased political comforts but have chosen the path of struggle… We will continue to struggle and work tirelessly for the country,” Patra said. Addressing the media, Patra said that despite the increase in numbers, the party continues to follow the democratic process of organisational elections and membership drives. He said this makes it different from the 1,500 other parties. “…we are a vibrant party. We work for our renewal,” he said.
The party has also appointed leaders in-charge to oversee the campaign in various states and union territories. Tawde has charge of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli; national general secretary Dushyant Gautam will oversee operations in West Bengal, Sikkim, Tripura and Odisha; national vice-president Rekha Verma will handle the campaign in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Ladakh and Chandigarh. Andhra Pradesh president D Purandeswari has charge of Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu; national secretary Arvind Menon has charge of Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep and Telangana; former MLA Rajdeep Roy for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland; national secretary Vijaya Rahatkar will oversee Chhattisgarh and Karnataka; national secretary Rituraj Sinha will oversee the campaign in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat and Ghaziabad MP Atul Garg will be in-charge of Uttarakhand and Bihar.
The membership drive process will lead to organisational appointments in the states, which in turn will set the stage for the election of a new party chief. Nadda’s term ended in January this year but he was asked to continue in office till the election of a new party chief. The party’s parliamentary board approved the extension in January. According to the party’s constitution, the first step is to hold a membership drive and organisational elections from the mandal (smallest unit) to the state level, followed by elections to elect a new national president. The electoral college consists of members of the National Council and the State Council. Individuals who have served as active members for at least four terms and as primary members for at least 15 years are eligible to become the national president. An eligible candidate can be nominated by a joint proposal of at least 20 electoral college members. These members should come from at least five states where national council elections have been held.
