Former poll strategist Prashant Kishor Sunday revealed that his ‘Jan Suraaj’ campaign will officially become a political party on October 2, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, and will contest the state Assembly polls in Bihar next year.

“As stated earlier, Jan Suraaj will become a political party on October 2 and contest next year’s assembly polls. Other details, such as who would lead the party, will be decided in due course,” Prashant Kishor said while addressing a Jan Suraaj “state-level workshop” in Patna.

The Jan Suraaj workshop was attended by several prominent personalities, including two former MLAs and the granddaughter of late socialist icon Karpoori Thakur, who joined the campaign launched by Kishor two years ago.

Kishor welcomed entry of Jagriti Thakur, daughter of Karpoori Thakur’s younger son Virendra Nath Thakur.

Late Karpoori Thakur, a former chief minister of Bihar and a Bharat Ratna awardee, and regarded as the father of socialist movement in the state, is seen as a mentor to many top leaders of the state, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD president Lalu Prasad.

Thakur’s elder son Ram Nath Thakur is a JD(U) MP and a Union Minister of state.

Notable persons who joined Jan Suraaj

Other notables who joined Jan Suraaj include Monazir Hasan, a former Bihar minister who had been associated with RJD as well as JD(U) and has served multiple terms in Parliament as well as the state legislature.

Other prominent inductees were former RJD MLC Rambali Singh Chandravanshi, who was recently disqualified from the legislative council on grounds of indiscipline, and Anand Mishra, a former IPS officer who resigned from service hoping for a BJP ticket but contested the Lok Sabha polls from Buxar as an Independent after being denied the ticket.

Another entrant was Priyanka, a daughter of JD(U) leader Mangani Lal Mandal, a former MP and an ex-MLA.

Who is Prashant Kishor?

A renowned former political strategist and founder of political consultancy firm IPAC, Prashant Kishor shot to fame in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls when he strategized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign, which was a spectacular success.

A year later, Kishor’s services were employed by Nitish Kumar in the 2015 Bihar state polls, and impressed with Kishor’s political acumen, the Janata Dal (United) supremo inducted him into the party in 2018, and soon elevated the poll-strategist to the post of national vice-president.

However, less than two years later, Kishor was expelled from the party after a falling out with the leadership.

In 2021, Prashant Kishor had his last run as a strategist with Mamata Banerjee as his last client in the West Bengal Assembly polls, which saw the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo retaining power with a thumping majority.

In 2020, Kishor had launched a campaign in his home state called ‘Baat Bihar Ki”, which got embroiled in a copyrights case and was ultimately shelved.

Now in his 40s, Prashant Kishor is eyeing to capture a piece of political landscape in his home state of Bihar, which is set to go to polls next year.
