As Ahmedabad continues its progress as an urban jungle, the city saw 6,534 trees being chopped down in the last five years. The trees were cut for industrial activities, development projects, and sometimes individual residents.
Arun Jain, a resident of Bopal, said that individuals and institutions don’t know the difference between trimming and cutting down a tree.
“Residents, corporations, and firms like UGVCL have chopped down trees in the name of development. It is sad to see full-grown trees being destroyed despite regulations that prevent such acts and the authorities prefer to look the other way,” said Jain. He said often citizens seek the shade of trees during the scorching heat for themselves and their vehicles but no one is willing to plant new trees. “There is a lot of talk about tree plantation but not enough action,” said Jain.
Anuradha Singhvi, a resident of Vastrapur, said a full-grown tree was illegally chopped off by an AMC contractor during the nighttime. “Such illegal acts have been regularly carried out by AMC. When we questioned they said they were trimming the trees but it was completely chopped down and the area cemented,” said Singhvi. He said despite approaching the authorities no action has been taken.
In Chandkheda, a resident unlawfully removed a tree from the society’s garden without permission. Pratik Patel, a concerned resident, said when they confronted the person he claimed it was obstructing something although the tree was on common ground.
Patel further said that no action is taken in such cases even after a complaint is filed. “Moreover, the rest of the tree continues to lie there and neither the AMC nor the Bagayat department has addressed the issue, even after being notified,” he said.
