Bhubaneswar: A 34-year-old man allegedly married five women without divorcing anyone in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar and was also in touch with 49 others on a matrimonial site for marriage purpose. The accused, identified as Satyajit Samal, cheated his wives of lakhs of rupees posing himself as a police officer, police said.

Based on separate complaints lodged by two women whom he had married, police laid a trap using a female officer
and arrested the accused in Bhubaneswar when he came to meet her. A car, a motorbike, Rs 2.10 lakh in cash, a pistol, some ammunition and two marriage agreement certificates have been recovered from the accused.

Out of his total five wives, two were from Odisha while one each hailed from Kolkata and Delhi, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissioner of Police Sanjeeb Panda said in a press conference. He further said that the accused was chatting with 49 women on a matrimonial site.

Conman used to target widows, divorcees; demand cash, cars

The conmnan, who hails from Jajpur district of the state but has currently been living in Bhubaneswar, used to target young widows and divorcees through matrimonial sites. During investigation, it was also found that Samal used to demand cash and cars from the women after promising to marry them. He also used to threaten them with a gun if they sought their money back, the senior police officer said.

Victims took loans to meet accused’s demand

One of his wives who filed a complaint against him said that she met the accused on a matrimonial site and they started interacting and meeting regularly. She alleged that he forced her into a physical relationship on the pretext of marriage and demanded money to purchase a car. The woman claimed that she bought a car worth around Rs 8.15 lakh for him after taking a personal loan from a bank and also gave him Rs 36 lakh to start a business.

The other woman in her complaint alleged that she gave the accused Rs 8.60 lakh and a motorbike. The second victim also took personal loans from different banks to meet his demand.
