Chennai- Salem Eight-Lane Expressway project shelved

The state’s first proposed Salem – Chennai  8-lane expressway project was shelved amid strong opposition from the residents over land acquisition. After this, now, the National Highways Department has decided to construct the second expressway route connecting Chennai and Trichy under the second phase of the “Bharatmala Pariyojana” project.

To further transform Tamil Nadu’s transport network and improve travel comfort, the Highways Department has proposed the construction of the 160 km Pilliyarpatti Thoothukudi Expressway. The highway will connect several districts as well as the Chennai-Trichy Expressway. These two highways will add about 470 km of state-planned road and network.

The Chennai- Trichy Expressway will be connected to cities like Thanjavur, Sivagangai, and Thoothukudi via various highway routes.

A boost to Tamil Nadu’s economy

The proposed Chennai-Trichy Expressway is a necessary infrastructure to handle heavy traffic in the state and reduce congestion. Apart from facilitating regional connectivity between connected cities, the expressway is expected to boost the state’s economy by attracting investments, promoting trade, and creating employment opportunities.
