THE Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has responded to recent critics of its performance by announcing it is already working to formulate a new Strategic Plan with the help of Consultant Laurent Torrecillas.
Head of the Guyana Olympic Association, Godfrey Munroe, told Chronicle Sport, ‘that upon the arrival of chef-de-mission and treasurer Garfield Wilshire today they will have a press conference thereafter to present the team and executive’s overall assessment and reset position for the country’s Olympic Committee after Paris 2024.’
The GOA has been silent on the country’s showing at the games which concluded on August 11.
Guyana’s Aliyah Abrams was the last athlete to compete on August 6th in the French capital.
At the Paris games Guyana fielded five athletes, Abrams, Emanuel Archibald, Raekwon Noel, Aleka Persaud and Chelsea Edghill with none moving on to the second round in their respective sport disciplines.
Guyana which has fielded teams for decades at Olympic Games has one Olympic bronze medallist by way of boxer Michael Paris at the 1980 games.
The Guyana Olympic committee which has been targeted for its lack of plans for the sport sector, in Guyana in a statement, said that it has begun work prior to the Paris games on a Strategic and Operational Plan 2024 to 2032.
The local body says it believes that the development and implementation of a strategic and operational plan is key to identifying and defining the strategic approaches in view of maximising resources.
The GOA says this plan is geared towards instituting a more effective and reliable support framework for athletes, national associations, and federations.
The executive committee says they got funding from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through Olympic Solidarity to recruit expert Laurent Torrecillas to assist the GOA with developing the document. Torrecillas is said to be an expert in strategic planning and has done work with other National Olympic Committees and International Sport Organisations in creating strategic plans.
The planning expert will meet key stakeholders in the sector in the coming days to discuss the plan, conduct a SWOT analysis of national governing bodies to gain insight into their plans.
