Namma Metro update: Passenger service on Green Line extension route likely to start in October

Bengaluru: Namma Metro’s Green Line extension, running from Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC) on Tumakuru Road, is likely to start passenger service by October. This extension, which is a part of Phase 2 of Namma Metro, includes three new stations: Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara. The metro line will start commercial operations after it gets safety approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

At present, trains on Namma Metro’s Green Line stop at Nagasandra on Tumakuru Road. After the extension, services will continue till Madavara. The frequency of trains will be decided based on passenger demand. The BMRCL is expecting an additional 25,000 to 30,000 riders from this extension.

Namma Metro Phase 2: Latest updates

The BMRCL officials said that construction at Madavara is nearly finished. Power supply is complete at the other two new stations, and will soon be finished at Madavara. They added that trial tests are expected in the next few weeks.

Once operational, this extension will provide better access to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, which hosts major events of the city. Commuters from Nelamangala and nearby areas will also benefit from the metro corridor as they will be able to avoid traffic. A parking facility for long-distance buses at Madavara will also make it easier for passengers to switch to the metro.

Under Phase II, the BMRCL has expanded its existing lines in four directions. Three extensions—Mysuru Road to Challaghatta, Yelachenahalli to Silk Institute, and Byappanahalli to Whitefield—are already open.

Previous delays in construction, land acquisition issues with NICE authorities, and the pandemic had pushed back the project’s timeline. Future lines being built under phases II, IIA, and IIB include new routes from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, RV Road to Bommsandra, and Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport.
