Approximately, there are only 600-700 job openings annually for over 71,000 educated unemployed youths in Nagaland in the government sector, stated I Meyionen Jamir, State Chief Information Commissioner today.

Officially, as of March 31, 2024, there were 71,322 job seekers in Nagaland, he highlighted while inaugurating Nagaland Power Solutions & Machineries as an authorized dealer of Honda India Power Products Ltd (Sales, Service and Spare Parts) in Kohima on July 24.

Jamir based his calculation on the fact that the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) recommended 347 candidates in 2022 and 292 candidates in 2023.

According to him, this indicates an annual recruitment of slightly over 300 positions through NPSC.

Likewise, the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB), in its inaugural year in 2022 with all the backlogs, recommended 587 candidates, and in 2023, a total of 295 candidates were recommended for appointment to various posts. This averages to 300 vacancies per year, the CIC postulated.

Looking at the scenario, he said, there were approximately only 600-700 jobs available annually for over 71,000 unemployed youths.

Jamir also said that the yearly addition of job seekers would be more than the number of new recruits. “Only in exceptional cases will new posts be created. The government is not in a position to create posts for the unemployed youth,” he added.

He also pointed out the possible saturation of jobs in the government sector, which could pose a high burden on the state’s financial health. “When we look at this year’s (i.e., 2024-25) non-plan budget of the State government, 90.69% of the budget is spent on salaries, pensions & debt servicing,” he highlighted.
