The Nagaland Police totals a ‘posted strength’ of 22,787 personnel, at present, according to the Deputy Chief Minister, incharge of Home, Y Patton. Patton revealed the figure in response to a starred query from NPF MLA, Kuzholuzo Nienu on the first day of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session, 2024.

The reply came complete with an itemised list of the tribe-wise composition of all the state police branches/auxiliary units, including but not limited to the 15 armed battalions, District Executive Force or unarmed branches of the various districts, PHQ and Village Guards.
As per the figures, the gazetted cadre comprised of 518 officers. The strength of the Non-Gazetted Officer (NGO) cadre, including the constabulary and non-combatant employees, totalled 20,877 personnel. The strength under the IGP (Nagaland Police Telecommunication Organization-NPTO) comprised of 1392 personnel. (See table for tribe-wise break-up).

While all the recognised Naga tribes and the Kuki featured in the gazetted cadre, there was none from the Kachari and Garo. A further 11 officers were listed as “others” in the gazetted cadre.

The NGO and below category featured all the recognized tribes/communities in the state. There were 1956 personnel listed as “Others” in this category.

Under IGP (NPTO), there was none from the Chang, Chakhesang, Khiamniungan, Phom, Pochury, Sangtam and Tikhir. A further 85 were listed as “others.”

The reply went on to state that the Nagaland Police does not have a “comprehensive transfer policy” covering the gazetted, non-gazetted cadres, as well as, for the constabulary and other non-commissioned officers. It referred to the Nagaland Police Manual where “certain broad guidelines” for transfer of personnel in the NGO cadre and clerical employees are mentioned. Barring this, it said that transfers are affected “keeping in mind operational effectiveness of the force.”
