A two day long “Workshop on Nagaland Disaster Risk Reduction Roadmap 2023- 2030” under the aegis of Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) commenced today at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima.

Addressing the inaugural session, NSDMA & NRE advisor Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe said that Nagaland is located in the most vulnerable seismic zone.

“Our land is weak and we are exposed to multiple disaster risk such as prone landslides, flood, earthquake, forest fire and wind,” he said.
To address these natural threats, the NSDMA under the visionary leadership of Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister, Nagaland and Chairman NSDMA has made Nagaland Disaster Risk Reduction Roadmap with a hope that this will secure the future of Nagaland from such risks, he said.

He said that NDRR is a policy document designed to achieve long term resilient in the state from threat posed by climate and disaster risks.

“This strategic document, designed by NSDMA with the technical support of UNICEF, envisages strategic action plans for different stakeholders,” Nyuthe said adding that it has estimated the baseline of disaster loss and damage in the state, set DRR actions under each Sendai Framework policy, defined collaboration from various stakeholders, and set attainable targets in alignment with national and global frameworks such as the Prime Minister’s Ten Point Agenda, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said that workshop, led by NSDMA in collaboration with UNICEF, is an effort to explore the ways required for the progressive implementation of the roadmap in the coming days in its true spirit.

Nyuthe believed that the stakeholders from different departments will benefit immensely from this workshop, especially in understanding the relevance of resilient governance systems, efficient social sector services, livelihood resilience, emergency response systems, infrastructural resilience, and risk-informed urban development for bringing long-term resilience to the state.

‘Let us build a resilient Nagaland’
Nyuthe encouraged participants to actively learn the art of result-oriented project proposal formulation methods and techniques, which have been designed exclusively considering Nagaland’s topography, geomorphology and culture in mind.

By the end of this workshop, each participant will have the skill to develop a DRR proposal echoing the values of a climate and disaster-resilient Nagaland, he said.

Experts from NSDMA and UNICEF will explain the detailed implementation process of the roadmap involving the roles of various stakeholders, including the government, academia, private sector, and civil society groups.

By securing sustained commitment of human and financial resources from all stakeholders, we aim to minimize disruptions caused by disasters and enhance our capacity to recover swiftly from any future hazards, he said.

Nyuthe maintained that launch of the NDRR Roadmap signifies a pivotal advancement towards a safer and more resilient Nagaland, “underscoring our collective dedication to strengthening preparedness for preserving our landscape and heritage from disaster risks and ensuring sustainable development.”

“Together, let us build a resilient Nagaland where every citizen can thrive without the fear of disasters,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Advisor congratulated the NSDMA officials for vigorously pursuing to make Nagaland state, a knowledge-house for disaster management.

NSDMA Joint Chief Executive Officer Johnny Ruangmei said that the workshop aims to provide practical guidance for stakeholders to take actions to minimize the impact of disaster in the state, reduce disaster risks, mitigate the impact of climate change and achieve sustainable development goals.

Starting this year, we want to target sustainable development, he said.

He also told the stakeholders and participants to incorporate the plan in the award of 16th Finance Commission.
