With the fresh mudslide, restoration works at the Dzüdza stretch of National Highway-29 is expected to take some more days while a massive landslide on the night of August 22 has cut off the Kohima-Khonoma road.

When queried about the status of the restoration work at the landslide and mudslide near Dzüdza Bridge, the SDO (C) Sechu Zubza informed Friday evening that the clearance efforts are being hindered by the fresh mudslide, particularly after heavy rain on August 22.

The road remains closed, and fresh mudslides continue to occur, the official noted.

The SDO (C) also mentioned reports indicating road sinking and opined that may take a few weeks for full restoration.

Likewise, Kohima Deputy Commissioner said that the road condition was worsening due to continuous rain.

On a positive note, the DC informed that heavy vehicles (6-wheelers) have begun using the alternate Peducha Bridge-Tsiesema (10 Mile Road). However, larger heavy vehicles will need to wait until the highway fully reopens.

Due to the current blockage, many heavy vehicles heading to other parts of Nagaland and going in and out of Manipur are stranded along NH-29, including at the Dimapur Bypass and Khuzama checkpoint (NH 2).

The District Disaster Management Authority Kohima led by the SDO (Civil) Jakhama on  August 23, distributed relief in the form of dry rations to stranded drivers at the Khuzama check point. For light vehicles, alternative routes are Jotsoma-Khonoma-Mezoma-Sechüma-Sechü Zubza and Dzüdza Bridge-Mezoma Basa-Sechüma-Sechü Zubza.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour on Thursday night caused a major landslide in Khonoma, completely cutting off the main connection with the capital, Kohima.

The road, which also connects Kohima with Peren district, will take a few days for clearance, sources informed.
