Kohima, August 27: The Nagaland Assembly is set to convene for a three-day monsoon session, beginning today, to discuss and review the state’s three-decade-old liquor prohibition law and the Communitisation Programme in the power sector.
The Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act of 1989, a cornerstone of the state’s alcohol policy, will be reassessed to evaluate its current relevance and effectiveness. Officials have indicated that a review is timely to determine if the prohibition still meets the state’s needs or if amendments or a complete repeal are necessary.
The Communitisation Programme, implemented to manage the power sector through a single-point metering system, is also up for review due to significant financial losses incurred by the government. The programme’s feasibility will be reassessed, and a possible repeal is on the agenda.
The session will also address proposed amendments to service rules for key government departments, including public health engineering, aimed at enhancing administrative and operational efficiencies.
The re-evaluation of the liquor prohibition law could result in significant changes to alcohol regulation in Nagaland, while the reconsideration of the Communitisation Programme may lead to a new approach to managing the power sector.
