On Tuesday afternoon, a young railway employee working as a point man in the Central Railway died on duty at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus station. The incident took place while the locomotive of the Konark Express was being coupled with its coaches.

Railway officials said the accident took place on platform 16 around 3:10 pm. Suraj Seth, 23, was crushed to death between the two coaches of the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Konark Express when he was attached to the locomotive.

The railway administration has expressed concern over the lack of supervision and manpower shortage in the security ranks of the Indian Railways. Officials said Seth was hired on compensation grounds after the death of his father, also a railway employee.

Incidentally, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced at a press conference in Delhi on Tuesday that out of the INR 2,62,000 crore allocated in the 2024-25 budget, over INR 1,08,000 crore will be allocated specifically for safety categories.
