Mumbai Local News: 116 lost children reunite with their parents in last 3 months

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is entrusted with the responsibility of security of railway property, passenger area and passengers. In addition It is also discharging responsibility as mandated by the Standardised Operating Procedure for rescued children issued by Ministry of Railways and working with other stakeholders to rescue children under “Operation Nanhe Farishte”.

Between April 1 to July 23, 2024, the Central Railway’s Railway Protection Force, Mumbai Division has rescued a total of 116 children of which 73 are boys and 43 are girls.

Recent incidents are as follows:

On 23.7.2024 RPF Personnel Manish Gaur and Shri Todarmal of Mumbai Division, noticed 2 children begging at Tilak Nagar station. The children were brought to the RPF post at Kurla where polite questioning and counselling by Salim Mulani, ASI revealed the names of the children as Sohan  Chamar, a boy aged 7 yrs & Ruhana Chamar, a girl aged 5 yrs. 

Meanwhile another child named Veer Pawar aged 12 yrs, selling mobile covers at Kurla station was also rescued.

The children were presented before  the Child Welfare Committee at Mankhurd in presence of Gazala Sheikh and Gayatri More, representatives of the Child Welfare & Women and Child Development Undertaking, Mumbai after the mandatory medical examinations. 

The parents of these children were traced and called and the children were handed over to their parents after the necessary formalities. 

Month wise details of children rescued are as follows:

1. April 2024: 15 children

5 Boys & 10 Girls  

2. May 2024: 37 children               

27 Boys & 10 Girls  

3. June 2024: 25 children              

16 Boys & 9 Girls 

4. Upto July 23, 2024: 39 children 

25 Boys & 14 Girls

The children who come to the railway stations without informing their families as a result of some fight or some family issues or in search of better life or glamour of the city etc. are found by trained RPF personnel. These trained RPF personnel connect with the children, understand their problems and counsel them to reunite with their parents. Many of the parents express their deep gratitude and thankfulness for this noble service.
