A 36-year-old man died and another person was seriously injured after a speeding SUV ran over them while they were asleep at Mumbai’s Versova beach.

The driver, a resident of Nagpur, and his friend have been arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Both men fled the scene without assisting the injured or informing the authorities, Indian Express reported.

Their blood samples have also been sent for testing to assess if they were intoxicated.

The deceased, Ganesh Vikram Yadav, was a resident of the Sagar Kutir area. To avoid the hot climate, Yadav, an autorickshaw driver, was sleeping on the Andheri-Versova beach on Sunday night with his friend Bablu Shrivastava, a delivery boy from Andheri.

The incident took place in the early hours of August 12. According to the police, Srivastava was abruptly awakened by a blunt impact on his head and hand, after which he saw a car ran over Ganesh, who was sleeping beside him.

The car driver and his friend got out of the vehicle, but upon seeing the two men seriously injured and unresponsive, they fled the scene in their vehicle as people began to gather, the police said.

Later, Bablu Srivastava and Ganesh Yadav were rushed to the city’s Cooper Hospital, where the latter died during treatment.

Based on Shrivastava’s statement, the police registered an FIR and launched a manhunt for the suspects. Other witnesses present at the scene were also identified, and their statements were recorded.

After an extensive search, the two suspects, Nikhil Dilip Jawate, 34, of Nagpur, and Shubham Ashok Dongre, 33, of Airoli, Navi Mumbai, were apprehended after their SUV was traced.

They were later presented before a local court which sent them to five days in judicial custody.
