Aizawl, Aug 26: In a successful rescue operation, Mizoram Police have brought back three Mizo women who were stranded in Syria for almost two years, an officer said on Sunday.

The women, who hailed from Hnahthial and Champhai districts, were illegally sent to Syria by a private placement agency in November 2022 to work as housemaids. They faced hardships and issues with their employers soon after arrival.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga took the issue seriously and initiated efforts to rescue and repatriate the women since May. The state government worked closely with the Indian embassy and Syrian authorities, and court cases were also involved.

After winning the legal cases, the Indian embassy in Damascus provided shelter to the women for three weeks before they were brought back to New Delhi on August 20 and then to Aizawl on Saturday.

The women will be reunited with their families within this week, the police officer said.
