Aizawl, August 28: The Mizoram government has ordered the closure of schools in four districts – Aizawl, Lunglei, Hnahthial, and Mamit – due to heavy rain and inclement weather conditions.

District administrations issued public notices on Wednesday, citing the risk of landslides, mudslides, and rock falls in several areas.

Landslides and landslips have occurred in Aizawl town and surrounding villages, with certain areas still at risk.

Schools were closed for five consecutive days in Aizawl and Kolasib districts and for a few days in Siaha district last week due to heavy rain.

Mizoram has been experiencing torrential rainfall since August 20, resulting in landslides and landslips in several places.

Landslides have occurred on crucial roads in Aizawl and other parts of the state, with clearing operations underway.

No casualties have been reported in the recent incidents, officials said.

At least 42 people have been killed in landslides and other natural calamities across the state since March this year, according to the state disaster management and rehabilitation department.
