MeT Predicts Rain for Next Five Days in Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The thundershowers and heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir have failed to bring respite from the scorching heat as most parts of Kashmir recorded a heat wave on Wednesday, with Srinagar recording a maximum temperature of 35.1 degrees Celsius.

Four out of six stations across Kashmir recorded a heat wave on Wednesday as the mercury settled nearly 5 degrees above the normal temperature.

In Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the mercury settled 5.0 degrees Celsius above the normal temperature, while Qazigund, recorded a maximum temperature of 33.0 degrees Celsius, which was 5.0 degrees above normal.

Pahalgam and Kokernag, the famous tourist destinations, recorded maximum temperatures of 30.8 degrees Celsius and 32.3 degrees Celsius respectively. At both places, the mercury settled 5.0 degrees Celsius and 4.6 degrees Celsius above normal.

In Jammu, the mercury settled at 36.2 degrees Celsius, while in Banihal, it settled at 31.2 degrees Celsius. Batote, Katra, and Bhaderwah recorded maximum temperatures of 29.6 degrees Celsius, 33.6 degrees Celsius, and 33.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, the weatherman has forecasted generally cloudy weather with spells of intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places in the Kashmir division and most places in the Jammu division for the next five days, from August 1 to August 5.

Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, told KNO that a spell of rain and thundershowers is expected at scattered places on August 6 and August 7, while isolated places are expected to see rain and thundershowers from August 8 to August 10.

In its advisory, the MeT said that intense showers for a brief period are expected, with the possibility of flash floods, cloudbursts, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones over vulnerable places in J&K, and heavy rainfall in a few places in the Jammu division.

Moreover, the recent thundershowers at multiple places and heavy rains at some places have brought relief to the people, especially farmers, officials in the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department said.

They said that the recent rainfall has brought relief to the farmers and increased the water level in the river Jhelum. They added that the situation at present is under control and that if rains occur in the next few days, the situation would improve further. (KNO)
