Shillong, July 31: The Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP) on Wednesday strongly refuted allegations of favouritism and bias in artist selection.
In a statement, Coordinator of the MGMP Season 2, Andreas War, said the MGMP Season 2 operates an extensive number of shows each month, ranging from 170 to 200 across the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Ri Bhoi districts. This ambitious schedule involves coordinating between 350 to 500 musicians monthly, a task that inherently poses significant logistical challenges. Critics have alleged that these challenges reflect poorly on the project’s professionalism.
However, MGMP officials defend their record, attributing any disruptions—such as venue cancellations or adverse weather conditions—to unforeseen factors. He said they emphasize commitment to rescheduling affected shows and managing operations as smoothly as possible given the constraints.

War said that the accusations of favouritism and bias in artist selection have surfaced, with claims suggesting that personal preferences influence which artists receive performance opportunities.
“With such a high volume of participants, MGMP maintains that favouritism is impractical. The selection process is designed to be fair and inclusive, aiming to support as many local artists as possible while adhering to performance standards suitable for venues. The project’s focus on promoting local talent excludes artists from outside the state, a decision intended to bolster regional artists and tourism. Despite claims of favouritism from café owners for preferred bands, MGMP asserts that a balanced roster is maintained to ensure equitable opportunities,” he said
On the role and conduct of MGMP Crew, War said that the allegations have also been made about the professionalism of the MGMP crew, with suggestions that crew members, themselves top-notch musicians, may be receiving gigs inappropriately.
“MGMP counters these claims by explaining that the crew’s involvement is crucial for managing last-minute cancellations and ensuring smooth event execution. The majority of the crew members are described as highly skilled musicians who contribute to the project’s operational efficiency. Their roles are critical for maintaining positive relationships with artists and other stakeholders, thereby supporting the project’s success.”

Further, War said that a significant point of contention is the payment structure for artists.
“MGMP pays performers based on predetermined amounts set by Meghalayan Age Limited and the relevant department. The maximum payment for café shows is ₹12,000, for busking ₹10,000, and for special events ₹50,000. These figures have been cited in allegations as insufficient, particularly when compared to the fees some artists charge, which exceed ₹50,000. MGMP defends this budgetary constraint as a necessary measure to include a broad range of performers within the established financial limits.”

It is crucial to mention here also that isolated opinions do not necessarily represent the overall experience of all participants involved in the project,” he stated.
