Shillong, Aug 28: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, on Wednesday said the Centre has set a target for Meghalaya to construct over 1250 kilometers of road under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Phase-III.

Replying in the Assembly, Tynsong said under the first phase of the PMGSY-III, sanction was duly accorded by the Ministry of Rural Development for construction of 400 kilometers of road.

However, government is awaiting sanction for implementing the second phase of road project which detailed project report (DPR) for 600 kilometers of road has been submitted.

“I am confident that we will get the sanction for this in due course of time,” he said.

Further, Tynsong also informed that the ministry had already relaxed the guidelines for implementation of the PMGSY-III in Meghalaya following the request made by the state government.

Accordingly, projects in the list of priority are now included in PMGSY-III and government has set a target for the state to complete the construction of 1250 kms within the current financial year of 2024-2025.

Earlier, Tynsong informed that the road proposal from Photjaud – Tynnai to Mawbidong in Mawkyrwat block has been proposed to be taken up under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana – III.

UDP MLA from Mawkyrwat, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, said that people have threatened to agitate by holding non-cooperation movement against the government in case the road does not get the sanction.

He said in case the road fails to get approval from the ministry, the government is urged to consider sanctioning of funds from the state plan.

To this, Tynsong said that the question of the road not getting sanction does not arise as it is already included in the priority list and now is awaiting sanction of funds by the ministry.
