Manipur University Hosts National Workshop On Agroforestry For Sustainable Development

Imphal, Aug 10: The Department of Forestry at Manipur University, in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD), held a “One-Day National Workshop on Agroforestry for Green Economic Transition and Climate Resilience.” The event, which aimed to explore and advance agroforestry practices in Manipur, saw participation from faculty, progressive farmers, and students.

Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, served as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Gopal K.N. Chhetry, Dean of the School of Agricultural Science, acted as President. Dr. I. Meghachandra Singh, Former Joint Director of ICA-NEH, and Partho Mandal, General Manager of NABARD, were the Guest of Honour and Special Guest, respectively. Dr. Chandrashekar M. Biradar, Chairman and Managing Director of Global Green Growth Co., delivered the keynote address on agroforestry’s role in economic and climate resilience.

The workshop featured three technical sessions and a panel discussion, covering topics from the economic potential of traditional agroforestry practices to innovations in green economic transitions. Key presentations included discussions on the impact of climate change on agriculture, the potential of bamboo in agroforestry, and the adaptation of aquaponics for sustainable aquaculture.

The event underscored the importance of agroforestry in driving sustainable development and improving livelihoods in Manipur. It provided a platform for stakeholders to explore effective agroforestry interventions, aiming to enhance both agricultural transformation and climate resilience in the region.
