Manipur ethnic violence: Kuki militants use drones to bomb Imphal West border, woman killed in gunfight

A woman was killed while four others including a police commando were injured as ethnic-strife-hit Manipur witnessed fresh violence on Sunday afternoon. The fresh violence was instigated by armed militants in Koutruk of Manipur’s Imphal West district, reports said.

The attack took place in the border area separating Kuki-dominated Kangpokp and Meitei-majority Imphal West districts around 2:00 pm on Sunday, reports quoted officials as saying. A Border Security Force (BSF) station was located near the area where the incident took place. 

The heavily armed militants opened fire from the hills, killing the woman on the spot. 

According to media reports, the killed woman suffered bullet injuries to her head while her daughter was hit on the hand. A gunfight erupted after the security forces reached the spot. 

The encounter waged on for over four hours till 6:00 pm during which a police commando also suffered injuries. Village volunteers from Kadangband also joined the security units in defending the area, reports added.

The militants were reportedly armed to the teeth and dropped bombs using drones. It was in one such attack that the Manipur Police personnel was hit by a splinter, Hindustan Times said in a report. A house was also damaged in the bombing, the dailu said.

A house was damaged when a bomb was dropped using a drone. No one was injured. It is said the incident occurred at a place near a Border Security Force (BSF) station. One police commando, who was in the reinforcement team, was hit by a splinter of a drone-dropped bomb.
