Bengaluru’s electrical, broadband cables are in disarray; citizens fear electrocution, short circuits, fatal accidents

Residents across Bangalore have raised concerns about the number of short circuits and fatalities caused by exposed electrical wires.

Despite these concerns, they stated that the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has failed to conduct regular inspections to maintain and check electrical wires in the city. This situation is worsened by the entanglement of electric wires and broadband cables hanging from electric poles or lying on the ground, making it difficult for citizens to distinguish between the two.

Numerous complaints have been filed regarding these low-hanging and tangled wires, including electrical cables and broadband lines. However, these grievances have been overlooked by the relevant authorities, with some complaints remaining unaddressed for over six months.

The residents pointed out that they are worried about the potential dangers posed by these wires. The tangled mess of cables not only poses a risk of electrocution but also creates obstructions for everyone, leading to a safety hazard. Tushar Chauhan, a resident of Harlur Road, said, “I feel unsafe walking on the footpaths or driving on roads where the cables are hanging so low.

Despite filing complaints, the wires are still dangling, and it’s hard to tell if they are broadband cables or electric wires. Although broadband cables don’t pose a risk of electrocution, they can obstruct pedestrians or distract motorists, leading to severe injuries and accidents.”

Open wires pose a significant risk of electrocution. Immediate action must be taken to prioritise these issues & prevent potential dangers

–Vishnu Reddy, BNP zonal president

The situation is particularly dangerous during the monsoons, when the risk of electrocution from exposed wires increases. Vishnu Reddy, Zonal President of the Bengaluru NavaNirmana Party (BNP) in Mahadevapura, said, “Open wires pose a significant risk of electrocution, especially during the rainy season.

It is unacceptable that officials are ignoring these complaints. Immediate action must be taken to prioritise these issues and prevent potential dangers. In addition, all unauthorised broadband cables should be removed, and regular inspections should be conducted to ensure public safety.”
